Police recover items from theft of church

A Lawrence Police investigation into thefts of Christmas presents from Corpus Christi Catholic Church led to the arrest Monday of one suspect.

A 39-year-old Lawrence man was still in the Douglas County Jail on Tuesday on suspicion of burglary and theft. He was being held on $3,000 bond, but charges were pending.

Police were called Sunday night by a representative of the church at 6001 W. 15th St., Lt. Steve Zarnowiec said. Police were told Christmas gifts had been taken from the church.

A patrol officer identified a suspect leading to Monday night’s arrest, Zarnowiec said. A search warrant was also obtained and certain property items were recovered, he said.

Caregiver charged with mistreatment

Police arrested a Lawrence woman accused of mistreating a 48-year-old man with disabilities for whom she acted as caregiver.

Officers were called Monday afternoon to the 2400 block of Melrose Lane after a maintenance worker noticed smoke coming from an apartment.

The maintenance man found the man and his caregiver inside, and police said he was able to help both without injury. Police responded and determined the 32-year-old caregiver was intoxicated and suspected of using drugs.

The woman was booked into jail for mistreatment of a dependent adult and various drug charges.

Suspect leads police on car, foot chase

Lawrence police arrested a 21-year-old Leavenworth man who led officers on a car and foot chase early Tuesday.

Police said the driver of a car near Ninth and Massachusetts streets refused to stop and then ran into an alley in the 1100 block of Tennessee Street.

Police said they found the suspect hiding under a porch, where he again escaped.

He was arrested near the Community Drop-In Center, 214 W. 10th St., then booked into jail on several charges. Police said the car he was driving was stolen.
