Chiefs place kicker on IR, waiting on Holmes

? The Kansas City Chiefs put kicker Morten Andersen, the second-leading scorer in NFL history, on injured reserve on Tuesday.

Also Tuesday, three different teams of medical experts pored over the results of an MRI on NFL rushing leader Priest Holmes while coach Dick Vermeil angrily rejected any suggestion that his hip injury was similar to the one that led to the end of Bo Jackson’s career.

Andersen, who had played in 248 consecutive games, also No. 2 in league annals, will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right leg.

He has scored in a league-record 300 consecutive games.

“But what’s important is my long-term goal,” Andersen said. “My goal is to play until I’m 50. If I want to do that, then I have to get this little problem fixed. Once it’s fixed, I’ll come back stronger than I ever was.”

With 117 points this year, he went over 100 for an NFL-record 14th season. He needs 55 points to pass Gary Anderson (2,207) as the NFL’s all-time leading scorer.

He will be replaced by Michael Husted.

Holmes, who injured his hip against Denver on Sunday, was home resting while everyone waited to hear from doctors. Vermeil said it remained “very doubtful” that Holmes would play on Sunday against San Diego.

He leads the NFL with 1,615 yards rushing and has 24 touchdowns, two away from the NFL record.

Vermeil said Dr. Jon Browne, the Chiefs’ team doctor, had sent copies of the results of his MRI to consultants in New York as well as to another associate, asking their opinions.

“We’re talking about a nugget, a huge 20-carat diamond,” Vermeil said. “We want to be sure very sure that we are right.”

Vermeil said early reports were optimistic that the injury is not serious.

He became miffed at suggestions drawing a comparison between Holmes’ injury and the one that struck down Jackson in 1991.

“Everyone wants to say Bo Jackson. That’s been thrown at me. We don’t put it in that category,” Vermeil said.

“We’re not going to overreact,” he added. “But a player of Priest Holmes’ status, there’s a tendency for rumors to fly and all these kind of things. I have nothing to say that is negative. I just got off the phone with him. He feels better than he did yesterday.

“But if there’s any question in regard to his health next week at that time then we wouldn’t play him. But if he’s healthy, he’s an NFL football player and he wants to play.”
