Spring Hill sinks Baldwin

? Holly Gault usually doesnâÂÂt have a whole row of fans at Spring HillâÂÂs girls basketball games.

But during the finals of the Eudora Invitational on Thursday, it was obvious that a special section of the crowd was cheering — quite loudly, too — for Gault and the Broncos.

âÂÂI was kind of embarrassed,â said Gault, a Kansas University womenâÂÂs soccer signee, of her five-woman fan club of KU soccer players.

The group was vocal anytime Gault touched the ball. The Jayhawks also drew spur-of-the-moment signs spelling out the future KU playerâÂÂs name and chanted a rousing rendition of âÂÂRock Chalk Jayhawkâ during the final seconds of Spring HillâÂÂs 46-27 victory.

âÂÂIt did pump me up,â said Gault, who scored six points in the lopsided finale, which featured the Broncos breaking a 10-all first quarter tie with a 16-3 run in the second quarter.

It took Baldwin nearly 19 minutes to match its initial 10-point output from the first quarter.

By then, Spring Hill — led by all-tournament player Jessica HockerâÂÂs 19-point performance — was on cruise control.

âÂÂTheyâÂÂre a great team,â said Baldwin coach Eric Toot, whose 19-4 squad last season suffered three setbacks to Spring Hill. âÂÂThey have a way of taking us out of everything that we want to do.âÂÂ

That included all but completely shutting down Emily Brown, the all-tournament Bulldog who had scored 52 points in BaldwinâÂÂs first two tourney games.

On Thursday Brown, who had a triple-double Tuesday, scored just four points on 2-of-6 shooting.

âÂÂIt wasnâÂÂt her fault,â Toot said. âÂÂWhen youâÂÂre not hitting any of your shots, thatâÂÂs going to go against her.âÂÂ

The Bulldogs misfired on a dozen three-point attempts in the first half, allowing Spring HillâÂÂs defense to collapse on Brown.

Megan Sullivan, a 6-foot-1 all-tourney player who scored five points for the Broncos, was able to keep Brown outside of the blocks.

Baldwin, which trailed 36-18 heading into the fourth quarter, finally attacked the rim in the final period. When the Bulldogsâ shots didnâÂÂt fall in the lane, Baldwin went to the line. But the Bulldogs connected on just half of their eight free-throw attempts.

After the game, Gault thanked her Jayhawk talkers.

âÂÂWe had to support our âÂÂ’baby Jay,âÂÂâ said KU junior Sarah Gonzalez, who led the cheerleading corps of sophomores Meghan Miller and Gabriela Quiggle and freshmen Holly Ryder and Caroline Smith.
