No. 25 College of Charleston stunned

? Central Florida came out aggressive and never let No. 25 College of Charleston back into the game.

Ed Dotson had 18 points, and Ray Abellard added 16 as Central Florida beat College of Charleston, 82-64, Thursday night for its first victory ever against a ranked team.

“It feels great,” Dotson said. “We came out here, played hard, did what we expected ourselves to do and came out with a victory. They played hard. We played hard. We wanted it more.”

Thomas Mobley and Zeke Johnson scored 15 points each for College of Charleston, which opened the season with six straight wins. It’s the most points allowed by the Cougars since an 84-63 loss at Georgia on Nov. 16, 1998.

“Central Florida deserved to win the game,” College of Charleston coach Tom Herrion said. “We’ve got to answer the bell. They were the aggressor over the first 20-minutes of the game. Put us on our heels.

“I was disappointed because we didn’t match how hard they played. We are usually a hard-playing team, and they outplayed us for the first 20-minutes.”

Zeke Johnson played 33 minutes off the bench. Herrion said Johnson was one of a couple of players late for the team bus and was kept of the starting lineup.

Central Florida closed out the first half with an 11-2 run for a 47-26 lead at the break. Both William Bakanowsky and Al Miller hit three-pointers during the run.

“Basically they played, and we didn’t,” College of Charleston’s Marcus Johnson said. “They came and stepped up, and we didn’t. When you’re coming at 50 percent and they’re coming at 100 percent, it’s hard to catch up.”

Zeke Johnson and Mobley hit consecutive baskets to get College of Charleston within 47-30 two minutes into the second half.

Central Florida, keyed by three three-pointers by Abellard, rebuilt its lead to 62-37 with 14 minutes to play.

College of Charleston was called for two technical fouls during the first half. The Cougars scored just four points during the final six minutes of the half.
