Montana’s Glenn new Wyoming grid coach
LARAMIE, WYO. ? Joe Glenn was hired as Wyoming’s football coach Thursday after leading successful Division I-AA and Division II programs in Montana and Colorado.
“I couldn’t be happier, or more proud to be the next head coach at Wyoming,” Glenn said in a statement. “I can’t wait to kick things into gear.”
Glenn replaces Vic Koenning, who was fired after three losing seasons. The Cowboys went 5-28 under Koenning.
Glenn has been successful at both I-AA Montana, where he has coached the last three seasons, and at his previous head-coaching job at Division II Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colo.
Montana went 39-6 in three seasons under Glenn. The Grizzlies won the national championship in 2001, finished second in 2000, and were 11-3 this season, losing 24-20 to McNeese State in the I-AA quarterfinals.
Montana tied a I-AA record by winning 24 straight games from 2001-2002.
Glenn coached 11 seasons at Northern Colorado, leading the Bears to NCAA Division II national championships in 1996 and 1997 and to five other playoff appearances.
Glenn joins a Wyoming program that hit new lows under Koenning. Wyoming went 1-19 in Mountain West Conference play, and two of the five wins during his tenure came against I-AA teams.
Koenning, Wyoming’s defensive coordinator for three seasons under former head coach Dana Dimel, was fired Nov. 18 but coached Wyoming’s final game on Nov. 30, a 49-20 loss at New Mexico.
