Favre’s pass injures receiver Ferguson
Green Bay, Wis. ? The Green Bay Packers may have solved their punt and kick return predicament through attrition.
Receiver Robert Ferguson injured the pinkie finger on his left hand thanks to Brett Favre’s fastball at practice Thursday, then dropped the next zinger because of the pain. Five minutes later, he sprained his left ankle and hobbled to the sideline for a big bag of ice.
“I think the fingers hurt worse,” Ferguson said on his way to get an X-ray.
Ferguson and practice squad member J.J. Moses are the leading candidates to replace punt returner Darrien Gordon, who was waived this week, and kick returner Javon Walker, who has been ineffective.
Ferguson said he’d be able to receive and return despite his injuries, and he was able to walk to his car 20 minutes after hobbling off the field with.
If he can’t, though, Moses will be activated from the 53-man roster.
“You stack the wounded and you keep marching,” special teams coach Frank Novak said. “That’s what you do in this league, somebody’s got to go back there.”
Ferguson’s injuries may help Novak make that decision much sooner.
At 5-feet-6 and 178 pounds, Moses would be one of the smallest players in the league.
Yet, the Packers think they might have a secret weapon for the stretch run in the second-year pro from Iowa State.
“J.J.’s going to be good back there,” Darren Sharper said. “He’s going to definitely excite some people. I wouldn’t be surprised ” and knock on wood ” if he takes one to the house.”
