Preliminary hearing begins for double-slaying suspect

The preliminary hearing for Damien C. Lewis, who is accused of slaying an elderly couple during a burglary at their home last summer in east Lawrence, was continuing Thursday afternoon in Douglas County District Court.

Lewis, 22, is charged with capital murder and other offenses in the deaths of Pete Wallace and Wyona Chandlee, both 71.

During Thursday morning’s hearing, three witnesses testified to events surrounding the discovery of the bodies and Lewis’s arrest.

Wallace and Chandlee were found July 11 in their house at 1530 Learnard Ave., lying next to each other on the carpet in the living room, according to autopsy reports.

Chandlee suffered two gunshot wounds to the head, one in the right side of the face and one in the top of the head. Wallace was shot once in the right side of the face and once in the back of the head.

The hearing is expected to last two days. Lewis, who was arrested on July 18, could face the death penalty.
