No change at top: Miami unanimous No. 1 in AP football poll

Miami will go into its Fiesta Bowl matchup against Ohio State as a unanimous No. 1 in the Associated Press football poll, while the rest of the top 10 also remained exactly the same.

The Hurricanes (12-0) finished their regular season with a wild 56-45 win over Virginia Tech on Saturday, their 34th straight victory.

Miami earned all 74 first-place votes and 1,850 points from the sports writers and broadcasters on the AP Top 25 poll panel Sunday.

Ohio State (13-0), idle since beating Michigan on Nov. 23, had 1,773 points to stay at No. 2 going into the national championship game at Tempe, Ariz., on Jan. 3.

The final poll will be released early Jan. 4, shortly after the Fiesta Bowl.

Iowa (11-1), co-Big Ten champion with Ohio State, also was idle and stayed at No. 3. Georgia (12-1) was No. 4 again after beating Arkansas, 30-3, in the Southeastern Conference championship game, while No. 5 Southern California (10-2) did not play.

Kansas State was No. 6, followed by Washington State, Oklahoma, Texas and Penn State. Washington State held its spot by defeating UCLA, 48-27, and Oklahoma remained in place with a 29-7 victory over Colorado in the Big 12 championship game.

Miami also was the unanimous No. 1 in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll, receiving all 61 first-place votes. The top 10 exactly matched the AP’s poll.

Miami and Ohio State finished 1-2 in the final Bowl Championship Series standings. Georgia, Southern California and Iowa were next, followed by Washington State, Oklahoma, Kansas State, Notre Dame and Texas.

Georgia and No. 16 Florida State will meet in the Sugar Bowl, Iowa and Southern California will play in the Orange Bowl, and Washington State and Oklahoma will match up in the Rose Bowl.
