Hargadine services

Mr. Hargadine died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

He was born June 1, 1911, in Kiowa County, the son of William Ezekiel and Rohema Cordelia (Keasling) Hargadine. He attended schools in Kinsley, Meade, Winona and Bucklin, graduating in 1929. He received his bachelor of arts degree in 1950 and his master’s degree in 1954, both from Fort Hays State University. He performed graduate work at Kansas University.

Mr. Hargadine began his teaching career in 1935 in Sitka, and he then taught in Fowler, Montezuma, Hutchinson and Haviland before teaching in Lawrence for 21 years. He was principal of West Junior High School when it was built and retired 16 years later in 1976. He was a principal for 39 years.

Mr. Hargadine was a member of First United Methodist Church. He was a charter member, past secretary and past president of the Lawrence Jayhawk Kiwanis Club, as well as a life member of the Kansas Kiwanis Foundation. He was past president of the Douglas County Retired Teachers Assn. and a member of the Association of National Secondary School Principals, National Education Assn., the Kansas Retired Teachers Assn., the National Retired Teachers Assn. and the Kansas University chapter of Phi Delta Kappa.

He married Emma Gaddis on May 21, 1939, in Kinsley. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a son, Doug of the home; a daughter, Mona Hargadine of the home; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Sharral Andrews, died earlier.

Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will receive them from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The family suggests memorials to the C.D. Hargadine Memorial Scholarship Fund at West Junior High School, sent in care of the funeral home.
