Graduation ceremonies short, sweet
More than 170 journalism, engineering and computer science majors at Kansas University were recognized Sunday during fall-semester graduation ceremonies at Woodruff Auditorium.
âÂÂIt was a perfect graduation ceremony – it was short, to the point, and it honored the graduates,â said Lorie Sjostrom, whose son, Mike Sjostrom, is graduating with a bachelorâÂÂs degree in journalism.
Sjostrom says her son hopes to become a firefighter and someday write about issues affecting his peers.
About 300 parents, relatives and friends attended the two ceremonies: engineering and computer science at 1 p.m., journalism at 3 p.m.
âÂÂWe had big turnout,â said Stuart Bell, dean of KUâÂÂs School of Engineering. âÂÂWe had about 60 graduates, but with all their families and friends Ãi¿½” the auditorium wouldnâÂÂt have held any more. It was packed.âÂÂ
The engineering and computer science ceremony was emceed by Michael Frisbie, a Shawnee senior.
KU Associate Vice Provost James Carothers addressed the journalism graduates.
âÂÂSeize this day and the others that follow it,â Carothers said, encouraging the 117 degree recipients.
Other fall graduation events at KU include:
⢠School of Business, 10 a.m. Saturday, Lied Center.
⢠College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, 2 p.m. Sunday, Lied Center.
⢠School of Law, 7 p.m., Dec. 20, Woodruff Auditorium.
