Venturing Crew 2691, chartered to the Wesleyan Church of Lawrence, went backpacking Nov. 22-24 at the Devil’s Backbone Wilderness Area in southeastern Missouri.

The boys hiked about 12 miles and picked up trash in the surrounding areas. The boys who went to Philmont this summer completed their 50-miler Award. The group stopped at the Bass Pro Shop in Springfield, Mo., and the Osceola Cheese Factory.

Scouts who participated were Bill Berkowitz, Jack Berkowitz, Thomas Fulbright and Will Sharp. Adult leaders who accompanied them were Crew Adviser Glen Sharp, Herb Tuttle, Rowley Tedlock and Bruce Wagner.

Cub Scout Pack 3071, chartered to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, participated in a supply drive for the Women’s Transitional Care Services, Lawrence, in October.

The boys collected toys, food and other supplies to be given to the center. The boys who participated were Daniel Wrigley, Mitch Damron, Branden Baston, Andrew Denny, Tyler Denny, Jaron Brynds, Devin Shoemaker, Dillon Waugh, Chase Reiling, Andrew Stussie, Derrick Rafferty, Stefan Kuczera, Travis Waugh, Marcus Fell and Dylan Warrington.

Joe King, an adult Scout from the Pelathe District, was honored with the Venturing Leadership Award at the Heart of America Council’s annual business and recognition dinner. King was one of only five adult leaders in the Council who earned the award. He serves as the Pelathe District’s Venturing Committee chairman, crew adviser for Crew 2159 and has been active in both Boy Scouts and Venturing programs. King helped organize Venturing Crew 2052, which is an all-female crew that recently was chartered. Venturing is a program for young men and women, ages 14-21, that focuses on one of five areas: outdoor, sports, arts/hobbies, youth ministry or sea scouting.

Other leaders from the Pelathe District who attended were District Chairman Tom Sheely, Bill Anderson, Ralph Clement, Cille King, Jim Peterson, Frank Wright and Curtis Harris, district executive.
