Old home town – 25, 40 and 100 years ago today
IN 1977
State fire inspectors reported numerous fire code violations and potential hazards in main buildings at Kansas University. They had recommended replacement of inadequate ceilings in many of the problematical buildings with the notation that sprinkler systems be installed. Fire officials noted that “in many cases, the university, and other public facilities in the community, are woefully shy of proper fire safety and security requirements.”
IN 1962
Lloyd Houston and Henry Brinkman were named the Kiwanis Club’s Substantial Citizen honorees for 1962. The award was designed to honor living individuals for long and meritorious service to the community.
IN 1902From the Lawrence Daily World of Dec. 7, 1902: “A show that recently appeared in this town was for men only and the women were quite confident that it was immoral and wrong. A week later, the same entertainment was given at the same place for women only. The men are equally emphatic in denouncing it and every man says his wife went without his consent. As a matter of fact, we are all about alike on that score. One kind of bad show is just as bad as the other. :
“General manager Foster reported that the KU athletic association had taken in $6,198.96 for the year and paid out $5,865.71, so the football season closed with $333.71 in the treasury. :
“Is there any recreation so fascinating, so elevating, so entertaining as taking pictures? Why not give a camera to the family? Raymond and Co. here have the cameras and supplies and the desire to show them. What a wonderful gift this could be!”
