New-look Ottawa boys rout Piper

? Ottawa High boys basketball coach David Grover wasnâÂÂt sure what to expect from his team this season.

After all, a squad full of fresh faces always comes with uncertainties before the first tipoff.

On Friday, the offensive question was answered loud and clear.

The Cyclones scored 45 points in the first half and 46 more in the second in a 91-60 rout of KC Piper at OHS.

ItâÂÂs a promising start to a season which sees just one familiar face among the starting five – senior Ross Thompson.

âÂÂWe shot it awfully well,â Grover said. âÂÂWhen you make that many threes, itâÂÂs always good.âÂÂ

Ottawa (1-0) buried nine three-pointers, and the constant threat from long range opened up the inside game for Thompson. He had a game-high 27 points on 13-of-19 shooting.

âÂÂHe shot 70 percent from the floor last year,â Grover said, âÂÂso itâÂÂs really an expectation.âÂÂ

Thompson was just one of three Cyclones to record double-digits in scoring. Junior Clint Bones, another big man, scored 10 points, and junior Lee Baldwin added 22, including a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range.

Ottawa took a 27-13 lead after one quarter and gradually pulled away.

The Cyclones scored 27 points in the third quarter, capped by a rim-shaking Thompson dunk as the buzzer sounded.

But Grover said there was room for improvement.

âÂÂI saw a lot of things defensively I didnâÂÂt like,â Grover said. âÂÂI donâÂÂt think we ran our half-court stuff as well as we needed to.âÂÂ
