Baldwin boys, girls win handily; Eudora splits
Baldwin ? Baldwin High’s girls basketball team started the season with something to prove.
After falling in a Class 4A sub-state last year, the Bulldogs opened with a 69-29 rout of Osawatomie on Friday.
Junior Emily Brown scored 18 points, while Kayla Pringle added 11 and Kari Garrison nine.
“We came out real strong defensively,” said coach Eric Toot, who added his team limited Osawatomie to less than 30 shots. “It was an exciting start.”

Eudora – Without leading scorer and two-time All-Frontier league forward, Lauren Kracl, Eudora fell in its season opener at Pleasant Ridge.
Kracl sat out with a hand injury.
But EHS coach Cara Kimberlin was surprised with her squad’s start.
“Yes, it’s disappointing because we lost, but we put up 63 points,” she said. “It’ll come. We’ll pick up a few wins before the break.”

Wellsville – With several of her starters in foul trouble, Santa Fe Trail coach Brenda Dahl went to her bench – and it responded.
The Chargers didn’t need much help to dispose of the Eagles, but Dahl said the early experience would be good for her subs.
“The bench got introduced real quick,” she said. “That was kind of nice to get that experience early in the year.”
Melisa Ball scored 16 points to lead the Chargers.

Boys
Baldwin 50, Osawatomie 38
Baldwin – Coming off a separated shoulder he suffered in football and a high-ankle sprain he sustained in the preseason, Baldwin’s Joe Gipp proved his toughness to coach Jeff Haas.
Gipp hit three of Baldwin four three-pointers on his way to 15 points, while backcourt teammate Andy Hannon popped for 22 in Baldwin’s victory against the Trojans.
“He’s missed all but a handful of practices,” Haas said of his guard, who was on crutches less than a week ago. “I was not sure what to expect. He had a brace on, but he’s pretty tough and competitive.”
