KU student affairs office to undergo name change

Kansas University officials have begun searching for a replacement for David Ambler, who retired this summer after 25 years as vice chancellor for student affairs.

The replacement will have a new title and more responsibility than Ambler did in recent years.

Officials announced Tuesday the student affairs division will be renamed the Office of Student Success.

It will include several areas that don’t currently report to student affairs: admissions and scholarships, new student orientation, freshman-sophomore advising center, university registrar, writing center and academic technology services. Those units had reported to Student Affairs before a reorganization in 1995 when Robert Hemenway became KU’s chancellor.

Kathleen McCluskey-Fawcett, senior vice provost and who is chairing the search committee, said the change in name would keep KU’s terminology modern. The added responsibilities, she said, are to ensure cooperation.

“It just makes sure units are working close together,” she said.

She said the position was advertised in six national publications beginning last week. She said she expected a high number of applicants.

The search committee hopes to hire someone to start before the next school year. The title change for the office becomes effective in July.
