total reflects 35 racial incidents in Wichita

Kansas reported 71 hate crime incidents in 2001, according to an FBI report released Nov. 25.

The report showed Kansas falling in the middle of the 49 states and the District of Columbia that reported incidents. California led with 2,246, and Alabama had zero. Hawaii was not listed on the report.

Lawrence reported zero incidents, but Kansas University reported two, both motivated by a bias against sexual orientation.

One incident occurred in April 2001 when “AIDS kills fags dead” was written on a dormitory door, said KU Public Safety Lt. Schuyler Bailey. The other incident, also at a dorm, was a verbal assault in which a reference to homosexuals was made.

Bailey said the perpetrators of both incidents were sentenced in Municipal Court.

Wichita led the state in hate crime incidents. The city reported 35 racially motivated incidents, two religiously motivated and 10 based on sexual-orientation bias. Four incidents stemmed from ethnic bias.

Other Kansas cities that reported hate crime incidents were Hutchinson, Independence, Mission, Olathe, Overland Park, Sabetha and Shawnee.

Kansas State University reported one incident, and Johnson and Kearny counties reported one each.
