WIC voucher pickup scheduled Thursday

The Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department will hold a WIC voucher pickup Thursday.

The pickups will be conducted from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 12 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Health Department, 200 Maine.

Downtown trolley rides to benefit organization

Short rides in a horse-drawn trolley will be given this week around Lawrence’s holiday-decorated downtown.

The rides, sponsored by Free State Farm, will be conducted from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday. The ride will cost $3 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under.

Proceeds will benefit Therapeutic Horse Riding Instruction of Lawrence, a nonprofit charitable organization that provides therapeutic riding for children and adults with physical and mental disabilities.

About 25 people can ride in the trolley, which will leave from the Eldridge Hotel, Seventh and Massachusetts streets, every 20 minutes. Also on display will be Shires, the largest horse breed; they weigh about one ton each. They were once war horses for medieval knights and were used in the United States by prairie farmers.

Audubon Society to sell bird seed

The Jayhawk Audubon Society’s early-winter birdseed sale is set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Lawrence Senior Center, 745 Vt.

A variety of birdseed and suet cakes will be available at the sale, along with bird feeders and bird, wildlife and conservation-related books.

Proceeds from the sale will help support the education and conservation projects of the society.
