Moore urges caution on possible Iraq attack

Count U.S. Rep. Dennis Moore, D-Kan., among the growing number of congressmen urging President Bush to use caution in dealing with Iraq.

The Bush administration has been calling for the use of force to topple Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, saying the leader poses a terrorist threat to the United States.

Speaking Thursday to about 30 people at the Lawrence Public Library, Moore condemned Saddam. However, he said Bush should provide Congress “credible evidence that (Iraq) plans to use weapons of mass destruction against the United States or its allies” before taking military action.

Moore talked individually with many people at the forum, including Lora Jost of Lawrence, above right, who held her 5-month-old son, Nicholai.

Moore faces Republican Adam Taff in the November general election. Moore’s district includes east Lawrence and most of eastern Douglas County.
