IN 1977

Despite bountiful harvests in the United States and Russia in 1977, Professor Roy Laird of Kansas University said he had discovered sun spots that could cause production to lag during the coming two years, causing serious supply problems. Laird was a recognized expert on Soviet affairs.

Franklin Murphy, former KU chancellor and chairman of the Times Mirror Co., Los Angeles, was named the 1977 recipient of the Thomas Hart Benton Award in the field of art.

IN 1962

Serbo-Croation, the South Slavic language of Yugoslavia, was to be taught at Kansas University for the first time the coming fall semester. International affairs experts said the study would be helpful in the future because of the changing nature of the region and the need for better communication.

IN 1902

On Aug. 27, 1902, the football prospects at Kansas University were noted in the Lawrence Journal. Longtime trainer George Palmer was at work fixing up the training quarters, and the Journal stated, “This building is now being put in order and will be made more home like and comfortable than it was when used before. From the large number of good football men who have signified their intention of entering school, and the many former players who will return, the prospects point to one of the most successful seasons football has ever had at the University of Kansas.”
