One person killed in two-vehicle accident

A 62-year-old Topeka woman was killed in a two-vehicle accident Monday morning just east of Big Springs on U.S. Highway 40 in Douglas County.

Sally A. Halvorson died in the accident, which occurred about 8:05 a.m. at the intersection of County Road 200E and U.S. 40 in Douglas County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that Halvorson’s 1989 Toyota pickup truck was traveling east on U.S. 40 when a 1990 Lincoln traveling west driven by Margarito Garcia, 29, Topeka, went left of center.

Garcia’s car struck Halvorson’s pickup truck, causing the truck to roll, the highway patrol reported.

Garcia and the four passengers in his car were not injured, state troopers reported. The passengers, all from Topeka, were Felisitas Sanchez, 36; Monica Canales, 22; Ilderlonasa Marango, 37, and Adelaida Soto-Morales, 22.

Douglas County Sheriff’s department, Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical and state troopers were at the scene.

As officials dealt with the accident, traffic was being diverted off U.S. 40 onto county roads. Stull Road is closed to through traffic because of a construction project.
