Familiar foes to meet in final

Mahan, Barnes set for U.S. Amateur rematch today

? Hunter Mahan has faced long-hitting Ricky Barnes in the U.S. Amateur before, and won. The difference, this time, is that the championship will be at stake.

Barnes and Mahan, who were paired in the second round in the 2000 Amateur at Baltusrol, advanced to the championship of the 102nd Amateur with 1-up semifinal victories Saturday at Oakland Hills Country Club.

Barnes, of Stockton, Calif., beat Wake Forest junior Bill Haas, the son of PGA Tour pro Jay Haas.

Mahan, of McKinney, Texas, earned his way into today’s 36-hole final with a 1-up victory against North Carolina junior Dustin Bray, the ACC champion out of Asheboro, N.C.

Barnes and Mahan also played together Monday and Tuesday in the stroke-play qualifying rounds at Oakland Hills.
