NFL Roundup: Brady leads Pats past Panthers

? Tom Brady finally found the end zone.

The Carolina Panthers are still seeking their first win in nearly a year.

Brady threw his first touchdown passes of the exhibition season to New England newcomers David Givens and Christian Fauria as the Patriots shut down the Panthers, 23-3, Friday night.

Adam Vinatieri, whose 48-yard field goal on the last play won the Super Bowl last February, added three field goals and is 10-for-11 in exhibition games.

The Patriots (2-1) struggled to move the ball in the first half and led only 6-3. Then Brady threw touchdowns on their first two series of the second half as Carolina (0-3) lost its 18th straight game since winning last year’s season opener Sept. 9 at Minnesota.

In the last game of the regular season, the Patriots beat the Panthers 38-6 as Carolina finished at 1-15.

While New England’s offense improved in the second half, Carolina sputtered. Through three quarters, the Panthers punted seven times, threw one interception and turned the ball over on downs once. All that came after they took a 3-0 lead on their first possession on Jaret Holmes’ 41-yard field goal.

Panthers quarterback Chris Weinke played into the fourth quarter and finished with 14 completions in 26 attempts for 112 yards and one interception. He was replaced by Rodney Peete after Carolina’s first series of the final period

Brady ended up 16-for-25 for 203 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in three quarters before Damon Huard took over in the fourth.

Vikings 14, Titans 10

Minneapolis Randy Moss had four catches for 76 yards and a touchdown, leading Minnesota to victory.

Guiding the Vikings’ first-team offense for a full half, Daunte Culpepper had a few overthrows mixed in with a 10-for-15, 137-yard night.

Cornerback Samari Rolle was one of three Tennessee regulars who didn’t even dress because of injuries, and the Titans held out six other starters who were slightly hurt including quarterback Steve McNair, running back Eddie George and tight end Frank Wycheck.

The first-teamers who were healthy played well into the second quarter, but No. 2 quarterback Neil O’Donnell looked a little out of synch despite finishing 9-for-14 for 119 yards.

Ravens 13, Eagles 12

Philadelphia For the second straight week, Philadelphia missed a two-point conversion late in the fourth quarter. Tim Hasselbeck’s 1-yard TD run with 1:19 left in the game got the Eagles (1-2) within a point, but Rod Smart dropped a pass on the two-point attempt.

Jeff Blake threw a 25-yard TD pass to Javin Hunter and Matt Stover kicked two field goals to lead the Ravens (2-1).

Last week, A.J. Feeley threw an 8-yard scoring pass to Sean Morey with 50 seconds left to pull the Eagles within a point of New England. But Feeley’s pass for a two-point conversion went incomplete as the Patriots held on for a 16-15 win.

Donovan McNabb completed 12 of 19 passes for 139 yards, but was sacked twice and had to run out of the pocket several times.

Jaguars 24, Bears 16

Champaign, Ill. David Garrard showed he can be a worthy backup to Mark Brunell, leading Jacksonville to 17 second-half points in a comeback victory against Chicago.

Garrard capped a quick 68-yard drive and gave the Jaguars (1-2) a 17-16 lead with a 32-yard touchdown pass to Henry Douglas with 7:35 left.

The Bears (1-2) are winless in two games at Memorial Stadium, where they are playing this season while Soldier Field is renovated.

The Jaguars put the victory away with 3:05 left when John Henderson sacked Bears’ fourth-team quarterback Ken Mastrole, forcing a fumble that Javor Mills recovered in the end zone for a touchdown.

Paul Edinger kicked field goals of 50, 38 and 45 yards for Chicago.
