Howard Lee Stuber

Winfield Services for Howard Lee Stuber, 76, Winfield, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church, Winfield.

Mr. Stuber died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002, at his home.

He was born Jan. 5, 1926, in Oxford, the son of Phillip Lee and Verna Leona (Day) Stuber. He attended grade school in Arkansas City, then moved to Winfield and graduated in 1944 from Winfield High School.

Mr. Stuber joined the U.S. Army after graduation and was stationed in Germany during World War II. He was discharged in 1946. He graduated in 1950 from Southwestern College. From 1947 to 1953 he served as a master sergeant with the National Guard in Winfield.

He was a parts manager at Stuber Brothers from 1950 to 1952, when he began work in the maintenance department at Binney & Smith. He was a fifth- and sixth-grade teacher for USD 456 from 1961 to 1986. He then worked for the city of Winfield electrical department until his retirement in 1991. He also had been an assistant coordinator with Cowley County Civil Defense since 1993.

Mr. Stuber was a member of First Christian Church in Winfield, where he served as elder, deacon, treasurer, chairman of the board and choir member. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge No. 110, Kiwanis/Winfield Sunrisers and Boy Scouts of America Troop 314.

He married Ruth Nadean Boyd on Dec. 18, 1949, in Winfield. She died March 28, 1995.

Survivors include a son, Richard L., Sand Springs, Okla.; two daughters, Debra L. Wilke, Atchison, and Melissa S. Mitchell, Baldwin; a sister, Phyllis Stauffer, Longview, Wash.; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
