Haas’ son reaches semis

Klauk goes down, 5 and 4, at Oakland Hills

? Bill Haas tamed “The Monster” and moved into the semifinals of the U.S. Amateur.

Haas, son of PGA Tour pro Jay Haas, beat John Klauk 5 and 4 on Friday at Oakland Hills after shooting a 28 on the front nine, making the turn 4 up.

How big did the hole look to the Greer, S.C., native?

“It looked like a bucket on the front nine and on the back nine, too,” Haas said.

Although one short putt was conceded for birdie on the front nine and the score was not official because it was match play, Oakland Hills officials said nobody has ever shot a 28 for nine holes.

Ben Hogan, who won the 1951 U.S. Open at Oakland Hills, dubbed the course: “The Monster.”

He will face Ricky Barnes of Stockton, Calif., who beat 18-year-old Spencer Levin, of Elk Grove, Calif., 4 and 3, in Saturday’s semifinals.

The other semifinal will have Hunter Mahan of McKinney, Texas, against Dustin Bray of Asheboro, N.C.

Mahan beat 2001 U.S. Junior Amateur champion Henry Liaw of Rowland Heights, Calif., 3 and 2, while Bray defeated Ryan Moore of Puyallup, Wash., 4 and 3.

Doolan, Ammacapane tied

Kutztown, Pa. Danielle Ammaccapane shot a 3-under-par 69 Friday that allowed her to maintain a share of the lead with Wendy Doolan after two rounds of the Betsy King Classic.

Allenby shoots record 63

Sammamish, Wash. Robert Allenby had few complaints about his golf over the last couple of weeks, only his scores. All that changed Friday with his best round in the United States, a course-record 63 that propelled him into a share of the lead with Steve Lowery in the NEC Invitational.

He ended his round with a deft chip under the branches on No. 18 for a 5-foot birdie putt.

Lowery started his round the way Allenby finished his, with birdies on four of his first five holes. He missed two short par putts on the back nine one from 18 inches and finished with a 65 to join Allenby at 10-under 132.

Retief Goosen (68) was another stroke back, while 22-year-old Justin Rose of England had his second straight 67 and was at 134. Tiger Woods is six strokes back.
