Chargers stuff Rams, 31-10

San Diego defense limits St. Louis to 87 yards, no points in first half

? San Diego intercepted Marc Bulger twice, ending a successful preseason run by St. Louis’ reserve quarterback, in a 31-10 victory Thursday night.

The Chargers (2-1) put the game away with a 21-point third quarter, getting the first of three touchdowns one play after Bulger’s second interception. They also shut down the Rams’ starting offense in the first quarter, holding them without a point.

The Rams, coming off three straight 500-point seasons, managed only 87 yards in total offense and trailed 3-0 at halftime. They weren’t shut out in the first half during the regular season all last year.

Ravens

Baltimore signed cornerback Robert Tate, who was released a day earlier by the Minnesota Vikings. Tate, a five-year veteran, started 22 games over the past two seasons with the Vikings. Drafted by Minnesota in the sixth round in 1997, he was converted from wide receiver to cornerback in 1999.

Raiders

Oakland waived backup quarterback Bobby Hoying. Hoying was Rich Gannon’s seldom-used backup for most of three seasons after arriving in a trade with Philadelphia in 1999. He played extensively in Oakland’s loss to Baltimore in the January 2001 AFC championship game after Gannon was hurt.

Jaguars

Jacksonville defensive end Tony Brackens isn’t ruling out further surgery on his injured left knee, and knows an operation could end his season.

Brackens, who had arthroscopic surgery to clean up scar tissue in the knee in the offseason, has barely practiced with the Jaguars this preseason.

Coach Tom Coughlin said Brackens would again be scratched from the lineup for today’s exhibition game at Chicago.

“There’s always a possibility” of more surgery,” Brackens said. “I’m not sure what exactly has to be done, but something is obviously going to have to be done if we can’t get my knee right.”
