Spray, Mefford Champs: Lawrence’s Chris Mefford and Larry Spray earned age-group championships in last Sunday’s Midwest Fat Tire bicycle series in Blue Springs, Mo. Mefford won the sports ages 20-29 and Spray captured the sport ages 50-plus division.

Larson Wins Again: Erica Larson, a former Lawrence resident, won her fourth straight Pikes Peak Marathon women’s championship last Sunday in Manitou Springs, Colo. Larson, 31, completed the 26.21-mile course in 4:41:53, the fastest women’s time in the event since 1996. Larson is now a chemist in Los Alamos, N.M.

State Horseshoe championships: Approximately 130 competitors are expected for the Kansas Horseshoe Pitching championships on Aug. 31-Sept. 2 at Broken Arrow Park. Lawrence Horseshoe Club members are hoping to attract sponsors for the first state horseshoe meet ever held in Lawrence. For information, call Wynne Mihura at 843-8450.

LHS and FSHS photos: The Lawrence High football team will take individual photos at 9:15 a.m. Saturday on the east side of the school. Th varsity team photo will be taken at 4:25 p.m. on Aug. 29 at Haskell Stadium. Free State will take its individual and team photos the same day at 5:45. The annual high school jamboree follows the photos at Haskell.
