Rollover crash on K-10 kills 21-year-old student

Shauna Szymkowski was the type of student who wasn’t afraid to ask questions.

Szymkowski, a Kansas University junior from Overland Park, was killed in a one-car accident Monday near DeSoto.

“She was very inquisitive,” said Fred Rodriguez, associate professor of teaching and leadership. “She was a good, outgoing student.”

Szymkowski, 21, lost control of the 1999 Mercury sport utility vehicle she was driving around 9:10 p.m. Monday. She was westbound on Kansas Highway 10 when her car hit the median and rolled over. She was wearing a seat belt, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Szymkowski was entering her senior year in KU’s School of Education.

Her adviser, Steven Smith, assistant professor of teaching and leadership, said Szymkowski originally intended to be an elementary school teacher. But this summer she changed her mind and planned to enter law school next fall after graduating from KU.

Szymkowski was a member of the KU swim team her freshman year, competing in freestyle and butterfly events.
