KANSAS CITY, KAN. ? Running a special Thursday night program, Lakeside Speedway provided something unheard of, thanks to Mr. Goodcents and Coke Cola: a FREE night of racing featuring West coast SCRA Sprints with a supporting class of NASCAR Factory Stocks.

Billed as the second annual Jerry Weld Classic, the night kicked off what was a great weekend of racing at the half-mile dirt track.

The 15-lap Jerry Weld Classic ended as quickly as it started as the stars ran caution-free. While pole-setter Lance Gremett, San Marcos, Calif., took the early lead, it was Charles Davis, Jr., who would come around to lead the first lap.

The Buckeye, Ariz., chauffer was slowed only briefly on lap 13 while passing slower cars. Bud Kaeding, Campbell, Calif., having started eighth, was the fastest of the sprinters and did make a challenge for the lead with only one lap to go.

Kaeding’s slide for life in the first set of turns almost worked as he was able to momentarily take the point, but it was the subsequent inside move that propelled Davis to victory lane.

42 NASCAR Factory Stocks provided as much excitement as the support class. Having only one caution, and great side-by-side racing throughout, their two B-Features and one Main was enough for the packed house to ask for more. The fans will get their wish as it was decided to bring the Factory Stocks back for the third of the three day show.

Kudos to Darin Edmonds of McClouth, Kan., for winning his first feature of the year in the Factory Stock division with his wire-to-wire win. He is now the tenth different driver to win in fifteen weeks of competition.

Edmonds did so with Jerry Humpert and Darin Christy, both from K.C., Kan., right behind him applying pressure the entire race.
