Rivera returns to DL

New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera was put on the 15-day disabled list for the third time this season after an MRI on Monday showed he had again strained his right shoulder. The move was made retroactive to Aug. 16. Rivera will follow a program of rest and exercise but no throwing for now.

Burnett out 2 weeks

Miami Florida Marlins right-hander A.J. Burnett, who leads the majors with five shutouts and tops the NL with seven complete games, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday with an elbow bruise that could end his season. X-rays showed an acute bone bruise in Burnett’s pitching elbow, and an MRI confirmed that diagnosis. With the team out of the playoff race, he won’t be rushed back into the rotation.

Phillies, Lieberthal agree

Philadelphia Catcher Mike Lieberthal began his career with the Philadelphia Phillies and wants to end it with them, too. Lieberthal took a big step toward that goal Monday, agreeing to a $22.25 three-year contract extension with a $7.5 million club option for 2006.

Rangers set record with 26th pitcher

Arlington, Texas Left-hander C.J. Nitkowski returned to the majors Monday, becoming the club-record 26th pitcher for the Texas Rangers this season.

Nitkowski spent time this year in the minors with Houston and St. Louis before winding up in the Texas organization July 28. He went 1-1 with a 1.80 ERA in nine appearances at Triple-A Oklahoma.
