If you’re planning to be out Monday afternoon or evening, you might take an umbrella along  and watch out for sudden severe weather.

The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies, with a 40 percent chance for severe thunderstorms in the afternoon and a 30 percent chance of them in the evening.

The storms have the potential to produce large hail and damaging winds, according to the National Weather Service.

NWS forecasters say a cold front is expected to drift slowly north from southeast Kansas and into east central Kansas by Monday afternoon.

Moist and unstable air will interact with the cold front to produce strong to potentially severe thunderstorms late Monday afternoon and evening, according to the weather service.

As the front drifts north overnight into north central and northeast Kansas, more severe storms could develop, forecasters said.

The temperature Monday will climb into the mid-80s, with the low dropping near 70 overnight.

Light rain and mist was reported in Lawrence from about 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. Monday. The Lawrence Municipal Airport reported 0.37 of an inch fell between midnight Sunday and 6 a.m. Monday.
