NFL Exhibition Roundup: Giant blunders ignite Falcons

? It’s only the preseason, but New York Giants coach Jim Fassel is vowing to make changes.

Fassel was downright disgusted after the Giants turned the ball over six times, had a punt blocked, missed a chip-shot field goal and jumped offsides four times in a 36-24 loss to Atlanta on Saturday.

New York's Will Allen, bottom, brings down Atlanta's Bob Christian. The Falcons defeated the Giants, 36-24, Saturday at Atlanta.

“This exemplifies everything that I don’t want out of this football team,” he said. “

The Falcons (2-0) watched New York self-destruct, scoring all their first-half points off turnovers and the blocked punt for a 23-14 lead.

Kerry Collins guided the Giants (2-1) on a touchdown drive to start the game, completing five straight passes.

He finished it off with a 1-yard toss to rookie Jeremy Shockey.

Then things went horribly wrong for the New York. Collins fumbled twice and threw an interception, with each turnover leading to Atlanta points.

Browns 24, Lions 23

Cleveland Joey Harrington, the No. 3 overall pick in this year’s draft, went 17-for-31 for 236 yards with two touchdowns and nearly rallied the Lions (1-1).

Harrington’s second TD pass, a 30-yarder to Eddie Drummond with 9:02 remaining gave the Lions a 23-17 lead. But Josh Booty threw a 27-yard TD pass to JaJuan Dawson for the Browns (2-0).

Bengals 22, Colts 10

Indianapolis Akili Smith led the Bengals on four second-half scoring drives, rallying Cincinnati. Smith completed 9 of 16 passes for 53 yards, while Jon Kitna was 7-of-11 for 60 yards. Gus Frerotte started and was 6-of-10 for 56 yards with one interception.

Patriots 16, Eagles 15

Foxboro, Mass. Adam Vinatieri kicked three field goals to lead New England in the first football game at Gillette Stadium.

A.J. Feeley threw an 8-yard scoring pass to former Patriot Sean Morey with 50 seconds left. But Feeley’s pass for a two-point conversion went incomplete off the hands of Corey McIntyre.

Cowboys 19,

Panthers 16

Charlotte, N.C. Dallas, missing five offensive starters, got four field goals from the combination of Billy Cundiff and Tim Seder and improved to 2-0 in the preseason.

After the Panthers’ starters staked them to a 13-0 lead, Cundiff put Dallas on the board with a 52-yard field goal in the second quarter. Seder was up next, knocking in a 49-yarder.

Cundiff tied it with a 32-yarder, and Seder won it for the Cowboys with his 25-yard kick that capped the scoring with 5:34 to play.

Carolina’s John Kasay, out the last two weeks with a groin injury, had field goals of 43, 45 and 34 yards.
