Guide directs parents to books for entire family

Parents who take the time to read to their children every night are being rewarded with a guidebook that will steer them toward books that can be enjoyed by the whole family.

The Children’s Book Council is offering its 2002 edition of “Not Just for Children Anymore!” The list originally was intended for booksellers, according to the Children’s Book Council, but it’s a valuable tool for customers as well.

Is someone in the family into architecture? The guide suggests “The City ABC Book” by Zoran Milich.

Fans of fairy tales might enjoy “The Girl Who Spun Gold,” a West Indian variant of Rumplestiltskin by Virginia Hamilton and illustrated by Leo and Diane Dillon.

The list of perennial favorites is probably the longest in the booklet, encouraging parents to share their childhood favorites, such as Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” or Dr. Seuss’ “The Cat in the Hat,” with the next generation.

To order “Not Just for Children Anymore!” call (800) 999-2160 or visit The Children’s Book Council’s Web site at www.cbcbooks.org/. Single copies cost $4.
