Nepal: More floods expected in Southeast Asia

Nepal rushed aid to areas devastated by floods and landslides as monsoon rains subsided throughout the Himalayan kingdom, but neighbors Bangladesh and India warned Friday of new rounds of flooding, aggravating the miseries of millions of people.

Annual monsoon flooding has wreaked havoc across Nepal, India and Bangladesh, killing more than 900 people in India since June and displacing or trapping about 25 million more.

Though rains stopped in Nepal, rivers were still rising in India and Bangladesh as the high waters washed downstream.

Moscow: Russia denies visa to the Dalai Lama

The Russian government reversed course Friday and denied a visa to the Dalai Lama, complaining that the exiled Tibetan leader mixed politics with religion to a degree unacceptable to China and, by extension, to Russia.

The ministry previously indicated it would approve the visit, which would be the Dalai Lama’s first full official visit since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Russia has about 1 million Buddhists.
