s practice was final one open to public until Aug. 21

Kansas University’s football team continued two-a-day practice sessions Monday with one small change.

After an 8 a.m. workout on the practice fields behind Anschutz Pavilion, the Jayhawks practiced at Memorial Stadium for the first time this season during the evening session.

“I think our players are learning to develop good work habits on the practice field,” first-year coach Mark Mangino said after the team’s sixth full-squad workout. “That has been an ongoing process with us. I think they are starting to realize that you have to come out and practice the way you would play in a game  with that type of intensity and focus. We’re really moving in that direction pretty well. I’m pleased with the way our players are working.”

Monday night’s practice was the final session open to the public and media until Fan Appreciation Day on Aug. 21, which is the final day of two-a-days.

Â

He’s here: Punter Chris Tyrrell is in camp after missing Friday’s media day and the team’s first few practices to attend his brother’s wedding. The sophomore is battling senior Curtis Ansel for the starting job.

Â

They’re not: Freshman defensive back Kenneth Thompson has not arrived in camp yet because of academic issues. The Grand Prairie, Texas, product, however, was still listed on an updated roster released Monday.

“There’s a possibility he could become eligible,” said Mangino, who declined to elaborate.

Defensive tackle Jarod Schulz, a freshman walk-on from Blue Valley North, has left the team.

Â

Position change: Junior walk-on Jeff Reinert has moved from quarterback to defensive back. He’s the second quarterback to make the move during camp, joining Derby freshman Nick Reid in the secondary.

Â

Up next: The Jayhawks will go though their final two practices in shorts today before working out in full pads for the first time Wednesday. KU is expected to release an updated depth chart Wednesday.

Â

On the air: Mangino will be a guest on “River City Weekly” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday on Cable Channel 6. The show will be rebroadcast at 7:30 and 10:30 that night.
