Old home town – 40 and 100 years ago today

IN 1962

Parallel parking was going to be tried along both sides of the 1100 block of Massachusetts Street to see if it might be practical in other downtown sectors. There were numerous skeptics.

IN 1902

On Aug. 12, 1902, the Lawrence Journal editorialized: “The government at Washington is making itself ridiculous. In the first place, a short time ago it sent out an alleged report of the corn conditions of Kansas and utterly failed to mention Douglas county. Now everybody with a grain of sense knows that when it comes to corn business in Kansas, no intelligent estimate can be made without counting Douglas county in so that the general average may be raised. In leaving out Douglas in its last report, the government showed that it has no proper appreciation of existing conditions in Kansas. If we have no crop here, then the world is shy on corn and wheat. Possibly it is because the government found it monotonous to keep saying month after month, ‘The crop conditions in Douglas are the best in the west,’ that we have been omitted.”
