Tampa trounces Kansas City – Devil Rays 13, Royals 6

? Tampa Bay manager Hal McRae didn’t know how to explain the Devil Rays’ power surge.

Jared Sandberg hit two of usually light-hitting Tampa Bay’s club-record six home runs Saturday night in a 13-6 win against the Kansas City Royals.

Tampa Bay's Carl Crawford watches his three-run homer. The Devil Rays hit six home runs against the Royals on Saturday at Kansas City, Mo.

Carl Crawford and Andy Sheets each hit three-run homers, and Aubrey Huff and Steve Cox added solo shots for the Devil Rays, who had a major league-low 91 homers before Saturday’s outburst.

“Don’t try to identify it, just enjoy it,” McRae said. “The boys had on their hitting shoes tonight. We continued to score, which was the key to the ball game, because it looked like it was going to be a high-scoring game.”

The 13 runs were a season high for Tampa Bay. Every Devil Rays starter except Jason Conti had a hit and scored a run.

Rookie Shawn Sedlacek gave up four of the homers in three innings, tying a Royals’ record for home runs allowed in a game.

It was the seventh time in Royals’ history that a pitcher has surrendered four home runs and the first since Jeff Suppan on April 1, against Minnesota.

Nine of the 19 batters Sedlacek (2-3) faced scored on eight hits and two walks. His ERA rose to 5.77 from 4.61 before being replaced by Blake Stein after three innings.

“I didn’t stick to my game plan,” Sedlacek said. “I left a few pitches up. I kept battling myself, and I think I just worked against myself. I feel just as strong now as I have all year, if not stronger. I don’t know if I tried to do too much or if I just worked against myself.”

Crawford, who was promoted July 20, hit his first major league home run in his 85th at-bat with Ben Grieve and Brent Abernathy aboard to give the Devil Rays a 5-2 lead in the second inning.

“I just try to hit line drives and if it goes over the fence that’s a plus,” Crawford said. “I was running hard. I didn’t even know it was a home run.”

Crawford, a Devil Rays draft pick in 1999, could have been playing quarterback at Nebraska this fall. He signed with the Cornhuskers out of high school as one of the top option quarterbacks in the country, but chose baseball after the Devil Rays selected him in the second round in 1999.

Sheets, who has homered in back-to-back games, hit a 1-1 pitch from Sedlacek to center in the third with Toby Hall and Grieve on base to put the Devil Rays up 9-3.

Sandberg led off the third with his 14th home run and hit a two-run homer in the ninth off Ryan Bukvich. Twelve of Sandberg’s past 20 hits were for extra-bases, including eight home runs.

“I don’t think of myself as a power hitter,” Sandberg said. “I’m trying to hit line drives. I’m not going to call myself a power hitter.”

Huff, who matched a career high with four hits, homered with two outs in the first. Huff has a career-high eight-game hitting streak with three home runs and nine RBIs.

“I’ve felt pretty good all year at the plate,” Huff said. “I think the key for me is being more patient, getting in a hitter’s count, laying off offspeed pitches. I’m getting in 3-1, 2-1 counts. Last year, too often I would chase the first pitch in the dirt and fall behind.”

Cox led off the seventh with his 14th home run off Scott Mullen.

Victor Zambrano (5-4) picked up the victory in his second career start. He went five innings, allowing five runs on seven hits.

Wilson Alvarez worked the final four innings for his second career save. His first was April 7, 1992, against the California Angels while with the Chicago White Sox. He made 249 appearances between saves.

Raul Ibanez homered, doubled and drove in three runs for the Royals. Ibanez, who leads the team with 75 RBIs and 17 home runs, homered in the first after Carlos Beltran walked.

In the fifth, Joe Randa drove in his first run since July 21, a span of 18 games with no RBIs.
