NFL Preseason Roundup: Falcons stop Jaguars

? The Atlanta Falcons gave their new fans something to cheer about.

Michael Vick led two scoring drives, first-round draft pick T.J. Duckett got off to a promising start and the Falcons opened the preseason with a 23-13 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Friday night.

Vick was solid in his first outing as the No. 1 quarterback. He was 7-of-12 for 58 yards and guided the Falcons to two field goals in the first half.

“I was really excited to be out there,” Vick said. “I threw some high balls in the beginning, but I settled down. I just wish I had gotten the ball in the end zone.”

Vick, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2001 draft, spent most of his rookie season on the bench. The Falcons cut Chris Chandler during the offseason and handed the ball to the 22-year-old left-hander.

The Falcons ushered in a new era under Arthur Blank, who bought the often-dismal franchise for $545 million and immediately set out to lure more fans to the Georgia Dome.

Blank’s most dramatic move was reducing season ticket prices to as low as $100. The impact was evident with a crowd that appeared to be at least 55,000, though the team announced only 43,624 in an apparent mixup with the ticket-counting system.

“The fans have really stepped up,” Blank said. “I am enjoying every moment of this.”

Duckett looks as though he’ll make an immediate impact. The 254-pound running back carried 10 times for 55 yards.

Bengals 24, Bills 17

Orchard Park, N.Y. Drew Bledsoe quickly established himself in his Bills’ preseason debut, a 24-17 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Bengals won the game in the second half with the second- and third-stringers on the field. Akili Smith hit Sean Brewer with a strike in traffic for the go-ahead, 8-yard touchdown with 2:42 left in the third quarter, and kicker Neil Rackers added a 34-yard field goal as the Bengals overcame a 17-7 deficit.

In a little more than one quarter, Bledsoe went 9-of-11 for 136 yards, threw two touchdowns and was intercepted.

Eric Moulds fought off Kevin Kaesviharn’s weak tackle attempt for a 31-yard touchdown reception to open the scoring four minutes in. Peerless Price, on a fade into the left corner, caught Bledsoe’s perfect touch pass for a 12-yard touchdown early in the second.

Ravens 12, Lions 6

Baltimore Will Demps spoiled Joey Harrington’s first pro game by returning an interception 18 yards for a touchdown with 1:55 left, giving the Ravens a 12-6 victory over the Detroit Lions on Friday night.

Harrington, the third overall pick in the 2002 draft, went 12-of-21 for 117 yards. But he threw two interceptions, including the game-breaker, in which he took a seven-step drop instead of five before throwing late to tight end Matt Murphy.

Cowboys 20, Raiders 6

Irving, Texas Quincy Carter directed the Dallas Cowboys to scores on their first three possessions.

Carter played the entire first half, completing 10 of 13 passes for 96 yards and one touchdown and also rushing twice for 24 yards. Rich Gannon led a long scoring drive on Oakland’s opening possession.
