Konzem, Kempf promoted

Kansas University’s athletic department underwent a handful of staff changes during the summer.

Richard Konzem was promoted to senior associate athletic director and Gary Kempf to assistant athletic director.

In addition, Janelle Martin was given the permanent responsibility of senior woman administrator, Mitch Germann was promoted to director of media relations and Janay Leddy to associate director of media relations.

Konzem, who will be starting his 22nd year in the KU athletic department this fall, had been associate athletics director. He serves as sport supervisor for football, men’s and women’s basketball and baseball. In addition, Konzem oversees the Williams Educational Fund and the ticket office along with the events and facilities staff.

Kempf moves to his new role after serving the past year as director of operations. Kempf, who worked 24 years as a coach in swimming, will take over sport supervision of soccer, softball, rowing along with track and field and cross country. He will also serve as the administrator for the speed and strength department and handle coach advising/mentoring.

Martin, who also serves as associate athletic director, assumed the role of interim senior women’s administrator last fall. She will continue to oversee rules compliance also supervise swimming, men’s and women’s golf, volleyball and tennis.

Germann has worked the past five years as assistant director of media relations. He replaces Doug Vance, who will work in an administrative role supervising the communication unit, which includes marketing, information systems, media relations, video board, athletic department hall of fame, trademark licensing and the ESPN Regional agreement.

Germann will continue to serve as the primary media contact for men’s basketball in addition to supervising the media relations office.

Leddy recently completed her fourth year as assistant director of media relations. In her new role, Leddy will assume responsibility as the media contact for football.

Beau White has been elevated to take over Leddy’s former duties with women’s basketball. White was a staff intern last year.

In May, Jay Hinrichs, a KU graduate who worked 17 years for the Kansas City Royals, was named director of the Williams Fund. Hinrichs, is responsible for servicing the 3,500-plus members of the athletic department’s donor organization.

While with the Royals, Hinrichs served as director of stadium operations (1984-90), assistant general manager (1990-2000) and vice president of ballpark operations and development (2000-01).

As of mid-summer, KU hadn’t announced a replacement for Pat Warren, who had served on the athletic department staff for the last eight years. Warren resigned as associate athletic director/special projects and legal affairs in late June.

Warren was accepted to the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business and left to pursue an MBA.

In his most recent role in the athletic department, Warren has been responsible for special projects and served as the primary liaison with the university general counsel’s office regarding the athletics department’s legal affairs.
