Portis wowing Denver staff

? Clinton Portis turned pro after leading Miami to a national championship and rushing for the third-highest total in school history in his junior year.

He doesn’t see any reason why that success shouldn’t carry over to the next level.

“How much different can a game be?” said Portis, the Denver Broncos’ second-round draft pick this year. “You still run the same plays out of the same concepts and do the same things. The game hasn’t changed a lot. It’s just the NFL, a different name for it.”

Portis has backed up his bravado so far in training camp. Denver coach Mike Shanahan said Portis would likely earn a spot as the third running back, behind Terrell Davis and Olandis Gary.

Although he was banged around on the inside a few times early in camp, Portis has impressed the coaching staff with his speed and quickness to the holes. He has been the most elusive running back in camp and has left even veteran players falling over themselves to get a hand on him.
