WNBA Roundup: Catchings sparks Fever past Mystics

? Tamika Catchings solidified her case for WNBA Rookie of the Year honors Tuesday night with 28 points and 10 rebounds as the Indiana Fever beat the Washington Mystics, 64-55.

Catchings, who ranks in the WNBA’s top 10 in five individual statistical categories, is the only player in the league to lead her team in scoring, rebounding and assists. She also leads the Fever (13-15) in steals, blocks, minutes and three-point field-goal percentage.

Catchings hit 10 of 20 shots, including 5-of-12 three-pointers, and had her 10th double-double of the season. Her biggest shot came with 4:04 remaining, a desperation three-pointer that just beat the 30-second shot clock to give the Fever a 57-48 lead.

Comets 67, Rockers 54

Houston Tina Thompson, who scored 19 points to lead Houston past Cleveland, collapsed on the court with 47 seconds left and was carried off on a stretcher. It appeared that Thompson was kneed in the ribs as Rockers guard Merlakia Jones went up for a layup. Thompson landed on her feet and then collapsed.

Monarchs 73, Mercury 70

Sacramento, Calif. Ticha Penicherio had 21 points, 10 rebounds and six assists to lead Sacramento past Phoenix, extending the Mercury’s road losing streak to 21 games.

Starzz 82, Fire 69

Portland, Ore. Adrienne Goodson scored 28 points and Marie Ferdinand added 17 as Utah clinched at least third place in the WNBA Western Conference with a victory over Portland. Jennifer Azzi had 10 points, surpassing the 1,000-point mark for her career, and nine assists for the Starzz (19-10).

Lynx 52, Liberty 49

New York Tamika Williams had 13 points and seven rebounds and Minnesota kept New York from clinching a spot in the WNBA playoffs. Katie Smith had 10 points and Tamara Moore added nine.

Sting 76, Shock 65

Auburn Hills, Mich. Tammy Sutton-Brown scored 19 points and Andrea Stinson added 14 as Charlotte helped its playoff chances with a victory over Detroit. The Sting, however, lost All-Star point guard Dawn Staley to a sprained ankle.
