Sunflower support

To the editor:

I stopped reading Mr. Woodling’s column several years ago because I thought his comments concerning sports people and events were offensive and certainly not funny.

I was attracted to his column of July 14 because of the reference to the Sunflower State Games. My wife and I have been volunteers for several years, and we were interested in the topic, not the writer.

Instead of straightforward reporting, Mr. Woodling badmouthed Topeka and its institutions and facilities.

We volunteered both weekends of the games. There were about 300 volunteers, and some came from Johnson County and Missouri as well. Topeka provided support, publicity and facilities necessary to make the games a success and demonstrated this very effectively.

If the games were so important to Lawrence, there should have been a positive and early response for additional support from the Lawrence Convention and Visitors Bureau and others.
