William Lawrence Davis

Mr. Davis died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community.

He was born June 15, 1918, the son of Will Fletcher and Anna Elizabeth (Hicks) Davis. He graduated from Evansville High School, Indiana. He lived in Ardmore, Okla.; Denver, where he was self-employed; Albuquerque, N.M., and Kingman, Ariz., before moving to Lawrence in 2000.

Mr. Davis became an apprentice for a local newspaper in Evansville, Ind., where he learned printing. He joined the U.S. Army on Nov. 10, 1940. He served in World War II in Central Burma and India. He was awarded two Bronze Stars, AP Theater and Good Conduct ribbons, and Overseas Bars. He was a technical sergeant, Link trainer instructor and honorary member of Flying Tigers. He had been a member of First United Methodist Church, Evansville, Ind., and Calvary Temple, Denver. He was also a member of Lithographers-Printers-International-Union.

He married Marcella Hilton in October 1942 in Old Monroe, Mo. She died earlier.

Survivors include a son, William Lawrence Jr., Baldwin; a daughter, Marsha Eves, Melbourne, Australia; a sister, Lillian Alderson, Evansville, Ind.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
