American League Roundup: Mariners roll past Tribe

Martinez matches record for sacrifice flies

? Edgar Martinez wasn’t aware that the record he tied even existed.

Martinez matched the major league mark with three sacrifice flies and the Seattle Mariners won their sixth straight game, beating the Cleveland Indians, 12-4, Saturday.

Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki connects for a hit against Cleveland. Suzuki had his first multi-hit game since July 25 in the Mariners' 12-4 victory Saturday in Seattle.

“I knew that doesn’t happen very often, but I didn’t know there was a record for sacrifice flies,” he said. “But it’s kind of nice to have any kind of record.”

The Indians lost their fourth in a row.

Martinez became the 11th player to hit three sacrifice flies in a game and the seventh in the American League. The last player to do it was Juan Gonzalez with Texas on July 3, 1999.

He said he doesn’t try to hit sacrifice flies. They just happen.

“I think it could be unconsciously it happens,” he said. “But in my mind I was trying to do the same thing I try to do in any other at-bat try to hit the ball hard somewhere. I’ve been hitting a lot of balls in the air anyway lately.”

Manager Lou Piniella was stunned by Martinez’s accomplishment.

“Imagine that,” he said. “As long as this game has been played, only 11 players have done that. That astounded me. It doesn’t seem like that hard a thing to do, but it goes to show you that it is.”

John Olerud went 4-for-5 with his 18th homer and four RBIs. Ichiro Suzuki had his first multihit game since July 25 for the Mariners.

Olerud, a first baseman who doesn’t have much foot speed, got a rare infield hit in the fourth. Olerud hit a slow grounder to All-Star shortstop Omar Vizquel, who charged the ball but couldn’t get Olerud at first.

“That doesn’t happen too often,” Olerud said.

Cleveland’s Ellis Burks homered off Ryan Franklin in the eighth to set a major league record with homers at 41 major league ballparks. It was his 24th homer of the season.

Burks, 37, hit a home run at Safeco Field in the first game of the teams’ Al division series Oct. 9, a 5-0 win by Cleveland, but that didn’t count.

“I thought that counted, but I guess it didn’t,” Burks said.

Burks was hoping to homer in Seattle.

“Somebody told me that and I said, ‘We have a four-game series out there this year and I may get a chance to hit one then,'” he said.

Freddy Garcia (12-7) gained his first victory in five starts for the AL West-leading Mariners.

Garcia, whose last win came June 29, pitched seven innings and allowed two runs on four hits and two walks, with four strikeouts.

“I wasn’t thinking about it,” Garcia said of his winless streak since the All-Star game. “I know we scored a lot of runs, but I wanted to pitch my game.”

Angels 5, Yankees 4

Anaheim, Calif. Tim Salmon hit a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning, and Brad Fullmer had a two-run shot as Anaheim beat New York. The Angels’ 10th victory in 15 games gave them a one-game lead over Boston in the AL wild-card race and kept them three games behind Seattle in the West Division. The Yankees, four-time defending AL champions, lead the Red Sox by four games in the East.

Devil Rays 6, White Sox 2

St. Petersburg, Fla. Paul Wilson won consecutive starts for the first time in more than a year, and Jason Conti hit a two-run single during a five-run third inning as Tampa Bay beat Chicago. Wilson (4-7) allowed two runs and five hits over eight innings. The right-hander, who last won back-to-back outings in late July 2001, did not allow a hit until the fifth.

Rangers 8, Red Sox 6

Arlington, Texas Alex Rodriguez hit his major league-leading 37th homer, and Ivan Rodriguez made up for a key error by scoring the go-ahead run as Texas rallied past Boston. Alex Rodriguez’s home run was his 278th as a shortstop, breaking a tie with Ernie Banks and moving into second place on the career list behind Cal Ripken’s 345. Boston’s Johnny Damon homered in his third consecutive game.

Orioles 8, Blue Jays 4

Toronto Travis Driskill won for the first time in almost a month and Chris Singleton homered in his second straight game as Baltimore beat Toronto for its fourth win in a row. Singleton, who hit a two-run homer as the Orioles rallied from a seven-run deficit in Friday’s 9-8 victory, hit a two-run homer off Chris Carpenter (4-3) to give Baltimore a 7-0 lead in the fourth inning.

Athletics 8, Tigers 4

Oakland, Calif. Tim Hudson rounded back into form with seven innings of four-hit ball, and Scott Hatteberg had a three-run double as Oakland beat Detroit. Mark Ellis had two triples and Eric Chavez hit his 24th homer as the A’s beat Detroit for the eighth time in 10 meetings. Hudson (8-9), who won 49 games over the previous 21/2 years, emerged from his second prolonged funk of a difficult season with solid work against the Tigers, who lost for the sixth time in seven games.
