Nine Lawrence store employees were charged Friday in Douglas County District Court with selling tobacco to minors as a result of an undercover operation conducted June 21 by Kansas Alcoholic Beverage Control.

Controlled buys of tobacco products were handled by ABC at 16 businesses and sales violations occurred at 10 of them, said spokeswoman Lisa Kaspar.

“That’s not good, in our books,” Kaspar said.

Kansas law requires a person to be 18 years or older to buy tobacco products.

There was no information late Friday whether an additional charge might be pending from the investigation.

If found guilty, those charged could be fined $200 to $1,000. The cases are pending.
