Chiefs’ Vermeil satisfied by practice with Vikings

? The players may have relished hitting somebody other than their teammates, and the 6,253 fans sure enjoyed it, but Kansas City Chiefs head coach Dick Vermeil rated Friday’s practice with the Minnesota Vikings just another day at camp.

“We got done what we wanted to get done,” Vermeil said Friday night following the first of two days of practices with the Vikings at Minnesota State University’s Blakeslee Stadium.

Kansas City cornerback Ray Crockett, left, knocks a pass away from Minnesota wide receiver Sean Dawkins. The Chiefs and Vikings practiced against each other Friday at the Vikings' training camp at Minnesota State University in Mankato, Minn.

“When you’re just running plays, and it’s not full-speed tempo, no one wins or loses in those situations.”

After a morning session that Vermeil admitted was a little sluggish, both teams turned up the tempo in the afternoon.

The Chiefs’ offense opened up against the Vikings’ defense in the first series of the afternoon and quarterback Trent Green completed 3-of-7 passes, the longest to Eddie Kennison for a first down.

Backup quarterback Todd Collins accounted for the Chiefs’ only two touchdowns of the afternoon during the offense’s next series.

Kansas City’s defense had its hands full trying to keep Randy Moss in check.

While the Chiefs’ secondary kept Moss out of the end zone during 11-on-11 drills, he still caught five of seven passes from Daunte Culpepper, three for first downs.

During the final five-play, full-contact series, Moss was knocked hard out of bounds in front of the Minnesota bench by Chiefs safety Greg Wesley.

The play led to some minor pushing and shoving between players from both teams along the sidelines, but Vermeil said there was nothing wrong with the hit.

“That’s pro football,” Vermeil said. “He had five shots to do that. There was nothing wrong with that. That’s a great play.”
