Menninger again delays picking school partner

Topeka The Menninger Clinic has again delayed a decision about a medical school partner that could force the psychiatric institute to leave its historic home city.

Clinic officials have said they want to affiliate with a university to bring education and research back into Menninger’s mission. Education and research were cut when the cash-strapped clinic laid off more than 700 employees in 2000 and 2001.

Menninger’s board of trustees had targeted Thursday for a decision.

Instead, clinic spokeswoman Nancy Trowbridge said this week that Menninger has delayed the decision for the third time, though it remains committed to finding a partner.

Bishop Seabury closes deal on new Alvamar campus

Bishop Seabury Academy closed Thursday on a deal to buy the Alvamar Racquet and Swim Club for renovation into its new campus.

“We’re very excited,” said Headmaster Chris Carter.

The Episcopal school for junior high and high school students is buying the western Lawrence property at 4120 Clinton Parkway from businessman Bob Billings.

It’s likely students will move next spring into the club’s renovated buildings, Carter said.

Bishop Seabury has operated for four years at the former Kaw Valley School, east of Lawrence.

About $4 million was needed to purchase the club, renovate buildings and acquire furnishings.

A celebratory picnic for Bishop Seabury supporters is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Aug. 11 at the club.
