Tempera euthanized

Champion filly didn't overcome fever

? Tempera, the 2-year-old champion filly owned by Sheik Mohammed’s Godolphin Racing, was euthanized after failing to recover from a fever.

The filly was preparing for the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs before developing a fever on Friday. She was sent to the veterinary clinic in Lexington on Saturday and euthanized Sunday night. The filly had an inflammation of the foot, which causes problems with the flow of blood, assistant trainer Tom Albertrani said.

“This is pretty shocking,” Albertrani said. “To see how fast her condition changed was unbelievable. It’s so unusual.”

Albertrani said Tempera’s condition worsened Saturday when he noticed “she just wasn’t right in her stall.”

The filly was taken 70 miles to Lexington, and her condition did not improve.

Tempera, along with stablemate Imperial Gesture and Kentucky Derby contender Essence of Dubai, was shipped to Kentucky from Dubai earlier this month.

The daughter of A.P. Indy, Tempera won three of seven career starts, including the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies last October at Belmont Park. In her last race, she won the UAE Oaks at Nad al Sheba in Dubai.

Foot inflammation and fever also caused Secretariat’s death in 1989.
