Firebirds second, Lions third at FSHS meet

A five-team girls swimming meet on Thursday at the Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center fit perfectly into Free State High senior Kelli Criswell’s spring schedule.

“It was good timing because we had a week off and we have about a week to go for league, so we won’t be too tired and we got some competition in,” said Criswell, who won the 100 butterfly in a personal-best 1 minute, 2.77 seconds.

Criswell was one of three city winners. Fellow Firebird Ashley Jackson, a ninth-grader from Southwest Junior High, won the 500 freestyle in 5:15.16. Lawrence High senior Andrea Hemphill won the 200 freestyle in 1:58.27 before leaving the meet to perform on the opening night of Showtime, her high school’s annual variety show.

“They did a great job focusing considering they had Showtime,” said LHS coach Ryan Adams, who had seven girls leave early because of Showtime commitments.

Blue Valley North, third at state last year, won the meet with 434 points. Free State (311) and Lawrence (293) placed 2-3.

“It puts things in perspective,” Criswell said of going against Blue Valley North. “If we’re going to see them at the end of the year, we might as well as see them before then.”

Criswell placed third in the 200 freestyle (2:04.83).

She also teamed with Shanna Felts, Jackson and Katelin Karlin to place second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:51.67). Criswell joined with Lisa Cloar, Jackson and Karlin to place third in the 200 medley relay (2:01.75).

“Kelli had an awesome meet,” FSHS coach Jama Crady said. “I’m ready for the championship part of the season. It’s time for us to rest and re-evaluate what we’re going to do for state.”

Karlin, a ninth grader from West, placed second in the 200 IM (2:24.35) and 100 backstroke (1:05.43).

Second-place finishers for LHS were junior Megan Little in the 100 freestyle (57.99) and the 200 medley relay team of Hemphill, Megan Little, Melissa Little and Sarah Marlow (2:00.12).

Felts placed third in the 50 free (27.52) for Free State and Marlow placed third in the 500 free (5:17.97) for LHS.

The Lions’ 200 freestyle relay of Melissa Farve, Axah McCalla, Beth Sheely and Julia Szabo finished third (1:51.67).

The city’s top placer in diving was LHS sophomore Katy McCabe, who finished fourth with 154.45 points.

City divers will compete Saturday at Shawnee Mission South.

The Sunflower League meet is May 3-4 at the Aquatic Center.

“Next week is the important week,” Adams said.
