Commission delays call for mediator funding

Lawrence city commissioners on Tuesday delayed a decision on giving $13,000 to an organization that mediates landlord-tenant disputes.

Officials with Housing and Credit Counseling Inc. said Tuesday their Lawrence office has been closed since April for a lack of funds. Fresh federal funds will be available Aug. 1, but the officials said they need the city money to make it through the next few months.

HCCI officials said they spent all the United Way funds early in the year that they had hoped to spend in tandem with city money that wasn’t appropriated.

Mayor Sue Hack asked HCCI to come back with a more detailed request.

City agrees to request to pursue more hangars

Commissioners agreed on Tuesday to start the process that could lead to the building of 10 to 20 new hangars at Lawrence Municipal Airport at an estimated cost of $30,000 each.

“The market demand is there,” said Rick Bryant, chairman of the city’s Aviation Advisory Board.

Bryant said enough pilots were interested in the hangars to be able to pay off the construction cost in 20 years. Several pilots also asked the city to build the hangars.

Commissioners gave unanimous approval to the request.
