Wet weather disrupts regional sporting events

Inclement weather throughout the region Saturday forced the cancellation or postponement of nearly all scheduled outdoor athletic events.

Here is a look at what was affected by the wet weather:

River City Festival  The high school baseball extravaganza at Free State High, Ice Field and Hoglund Ballpark, was called after two games at each of two sites were played early Saturday. The remaining games will not be made up.

“It’s just impossible to work out the travel,” FSHS baseball coach Mike Hill said.

KU baseball  For the second straight day, rain hindered the Kansas-Missouri baseball series. Friday’s game in Columbia, Mo., was pushed back a day and made part of a scheduled doubleheader Saturday at Kansas’ Hoglund Ballpark. Now the series has been shortened to a twinbill, beginning at 2 p.m., today at Hoglund.

Free State High tennis  The Firebirds’ participation at the Junction City Invitational was halted at noon. Play will resume on Wednesday.

Big 12 women’s golf  Only three groups had completed the second round before play was halted at Manhattan’s Colbert Hills Golf Course. The second round will resume at 7:30 this morning, and the third round will begin with a shotgun start approximately an hour after the completion of the second round. Oklahoma State leads by 13 strokes after the first round, and Kansas is in 12th place.
